I would like to take the time and welcome you to the Texas Peace Officers Association's website. This is an organization comprised of approximately 300 officers of all nationalities within the Austin Police Department. The original chapter which was known as the Texas Negro Peace Officers Association began on October 17, 1935 and was the first black organization in the United State. In 1955 the association decided to change its name to Texas Peace Officers Association to remove the stigma from themselves as being different from other officers.
The Austin Chapter was formed in 1978 at the
direction of Captains Freddie Maxwell and the late Louie White when it was
difficult for minority officers to co-exist with their fellow officers in blue.
Times have greatly improved over the years, however overall we're still lacking
in the recruitment of all minority officers. I've always been a proud member of
the Austin Police Department since joining in August of 1990, and TPOA was very
instrumental with my career. The Texas Peace Officers Association is currently
reorganizing, and we're hoping to make an impact within the great city we serve.
